Local SEO and Local Services Ads work better together

Local Services Ads sit at the top of Google. The auction uses your local SEO signals, so one makes the other cheaper. Here's the play.

LSAs run on the same signals that get you into the map pack.

If you run a service business in a category Google supports, you have probably been pitched Local Services Ads. The sales script is "pay per lead, not per click, Google-backed guarantee." That part is true.

The part the rep leaves out is this. Your LSA cost per lead is set by the same signals your local SEO is built on. Reviews, rating, response time, hours. The work that gets you into the map pack also lowers what you pay for an ad. Skip either and the other costs more.

What LSAs are

Local Services Ads are the three business cards at the very top of some Google searches, above the map pack and above the regular ads. Each card shows a star rating, review count, and the Google Guaranteed badge. Customers tap, call, or message you.

You pay per lead instead of per click. A lead outside your service area or category can be disputed and refunded.

Not every industry qualifies. Google runs LSAs for home services (plumbers, electricians, HVAC, roofers, cleaning, pest control, lawn care, movers), legal, real estate, automotive services, education such as tutors and driving instructors, pet care, and financial and tax prep.

If your category is on that list and you are not running LSAs, your top-of-page spot is sitting there for a competitor to take.

The LSA auction uses your Google profile

Here is the part most agencies gloss over. Google decides which three LSAs to show based on five things:

  1. Your review rating and count
  2. How recent your newest reviews are
  3. Your response time to messages and calls
  4. Your bid
  5. Proximity to the searcher

Your bid is one of five. The other four are the same signals that rank your Google Business Profile in the map pack.

A business holding a 4.9 rating, pulling in two new reviews a week, answering calls within an hour, and replying to every review will outrank a competitor with a bigger bid and worse signals. A one-star drop in your average rating can double what you pay per lead. The math goes the other way too: lift your rating and your response time and the same budget delivers more leads.

Three combination plays

LSA first, SEO later. You need leads this quarter. Turn on LSAs with a budget cap and start getting phone calls today. Use the revenue to pay for the slower local SEO work: review generation, service pages, photos, consistent posts.

SEO first, LSA later. You already have years of reviews and a strong rating. Turn on LSAs and you pay less than a brand new competitor doing the same work. Your profile earned you a lower price before you ever opened the ads account.

Both at once. You own LSA position one, map pack position one, and organic position one. Three spots on page one for a single query. A searcher who scrolls past your LSA to the map still sees you. The one who scrolls past both sees you a third time. In most local markets, nobody else is doing this, so the cost of taking all three is lower than you would think.

The honest caveat

LSAs do nothing for your website. The leads you buy do not improve your organic ranking. The clicks go to Google's own landing page, not yours. The day you stop paying, the leads stop.

Local SEO builds equity on property you own. Reviews stay. Service pages stay. Rankings do not vanish when you cut the budget.

Run both. Lean on LSAs for the pipeline you need this month and on SEO for the pipeline you will have in two years whether you pay or not.

Common questions

Does my industry qualify for LSAs?

Google supports home services, legal, real estate, automotive services, some education and tutoring, pet care, and tax and financial prep. The full list is on Google’s Local Services Ads page and expands every year. Retail does not qualify today.

How much do LSAs cost per lead?

It varies by industry and city. Home services typically run $12 to $80 per lead. The exact price depends on your rating, review volume, response time, and bid. Better profile signals mean cheaper leads.

Can I turn off LSAs if the leads are not profitable?

Yes. Set a weekly budget cap, pause the campaign at any time, and dispute any lead that falls outside your service area or category. Google refunds valid disputes.

Do LSAs show on desktop too, or just mobile?

Both. Three LSA cards show on mobile and desktop in supported categories. On mobile they almost always sit above the fold, which is why they get so much tap-through.
